Pyrgi village is a settlement on the island of Chios. It is also widely known as the “painted village”.  The houses are decorated in a unique way. The walls are painted with black and white decorative motifs in different shapes called “xysta”. Pyrgi is on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. As you wander around the village you will notice the profound medieval character of the architecture. The cobbled streets are narrow and often covered with arches or vaults. The village was built in a way that would be a good fortress to protect its inhabitants from pirates. The houses are detached and connected to each other through vaults and archways.
